How We Met

Elton's version
It was 2012. Having recently lost a substantial amount of weight and feeling good about myself, I (and my frat boy squad of friends) went to the library to meet girls. I never really saw myself as a guy who picks up girls in a bar, but it was what you did in Oxford. I ran into Anne at The Library, Oxford’s most infamous college town spot. What struck me about Anne was that she was not the “girl you meet at a bar.” To be fair, yes, she was indeed at The Library at the same time I was. We knew each other through friends, but had never actually had a one on one conversation. When we did, on the second floor Patio room, it instantly felt like a relationship that could last a long time. She was quick-witted, obviously intelligent, and—the best part: pretty dorky! I don’t think we talked about Star Wars or Lord of the Rings the first night, but I knew she was a shoe-in for both. At that moment, I knew I wanted to be around her more. I never lost that feeling. Within a couple months, we were officially dating; six years later, we got engaged. And I’ve never been happier.

Anne's Version
Elton and I probably should’ve met long before December of 2012. Throughout college we shared a mutual best friend, Emily Corban, and although we had been at the same parties and have many shared acquaintances, we just had never formally met. I think it’s safe to say that I’m to blame for this. I spent a lot of my time at Ole Miss at track/cross country practice or traveling across the South to various meets. Anyway, back to December 2012. We were in the middle of our senior year, getting ready to leave for winter break. I went with my friend Emily to the Library Sports Bar on a Friday night, and we met up with some variety of the KA/DG squad. Elton was there and we just started chatting and he bought me a drink. I don’t remember what we talked about, but I remember thinking how sweet and cute he was. We danced and had so much fun. We exchanged numbers and he asked if he could take me to lunch the next day. Lunchtime the next day rolls around and I’m moving pretty slow, but I agree to lunch. He picks me up and he is wearing a polo, hair brushed, looking sharp and ready for a date. I guess I just thought it was a “let’s get a bite hungover” meal, so I’m in a t-shirt and shorts. SMH… Anyways, we go, it was an amazing lunch (as always, Volta) and I’m realizing how much I like this guy. He leaves Oxford that afternoon for Florence for winter break. We text throughout winter break and meet up in Birmingham for the Compass Bowl and Shark Tank Party in early January. What a time. When we got back to Ole Miss for our senior spring semester, our relationship builds and on February 4, 2013 we decide to become BF/GF. Now, over 7 years later, we are getting married! I love Elton and the adventures we share together.
